During the March 4, 2002 meeting of The Philadelphia Society for Promoting Agriculture a short ceremony was held to formally recognize Dr. Eldrow “Dutch” Reeve for his numerous contributions to the Society. Mr. John H. Osborn described Dr. Reeve’s professional career and President Richard Hart presented a framed certificate of appreciation.
Biographical Sketch
Dr. Eldrow (Dutch) Reeve was born on a farm near Hurricane in southwestern Utah. He attended Utah State University in Logan where he obtained his Baccalaureate and Masters Degrees in Plant Science. He was awarded his Ph.D. degree in Soil Science at Rutgers University’s Cook College. Following graduation from Rutgers University, Grocery Store Products Company in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania employed him as a mushroom specialist. A few years later he joined Campbell Soup Company first as a mushroom specialist and later as a member of the company’s Agricultural Research Department. He was employed by Campbell Soup Company for 37 years and retired as Director, Vegetable Research International of the Campbell Institute for Research and Technology. In addition to supervising vegetable research projects, Dr. Reeve visited many countries in Europe, Africa, Middle East, Latin America and Asia to investigate the production of vegetables and mushrooms.
Dr. Reeve joined The Philadelphia Society for Promoting Agriculture in 1984, was elected Vice President in 1991 and served as President during 1992-93. He served as Chairman of the Finance Committee for a number of years. He has been a loyal member and benefactor of the Society.
Dr. and Mrs. Reeve have maintained close relationships with Utah State University, their alma mater and have provided college scholarships to promising high school graduates. Dutch has been a long-term member of the Utah State National Advisory Council and in April 1991 received an honorary Doctorate Degree in Agribusiness from the University.
Dr. and Mrs. Reeve currently reside on Dutchess Farm III near Newtown, Pennsylvania. Sometime later this year they plan leave their farm and reside at an address as yet undetermined.
