Field Notes
With a wonderful sunny, but not too bright, day so that sunglasses weren’t necessary to enjoy the profusion of rhododendrons and collection of conifers, eighty PSPA members and guests toured the gardens of PSPA Member Dr. Fred Winter and his wife, Barbara. Their fifteen acre “Company Farm” in Pottstown, PA is adjacent to the old Girard Canal alongside the Schuylkill River. Entrepreneur Steven Girard had stalls on the property for some 400 mules necessary for hauling canal barges. The same barn from which the mules were fed still stands, and was the location for a wonderful catered luncheon and an informal Q&A talk by PBS garden editor, Mike McGrath.
