Lundale Farm will present the movie “Sustainable” along with a farmer and chef panel discussion at The Colonial Theatre on Wednesday, March 28. The film will begin at 7. Panelists include Emma Cunniff, Kneehigh Farm at Lundale Farm; Dean Carlson, Wyebrook Farm; Susan Miller, Birchrun Hills Farm; and Chef Eric Yost, Suburban Restaurant and Beer Garden and the anticipated Suburban Brewing Co. The farmers and chef will share their views of sustainability in a local food system, and what consumers can do to promote and protect that system.
Emma Cunniff of Kneehigh Farm will be starting her third season at Lundale Farm this year. In an interview with FarmBelly, Emma reflected on what she appreciates most being a small, sustainable farmer in the Greater Philadelphia region: “We prioritize meeting our CSA members face to face… We make it clear that they are directly involved with our success, and should feel a sense of ownership of the farm. We cater to their desires, but are also excited to share our favorite foods, and experiences with them. It’s motivating to feel their pride in us and in how we operate the farm, as well as their gratitude and support. In turn, we are grateful to feed them, introduce new foods, and provide healthy yummy veggies for our community.” Cunniff, through regenerative farming methods, will leave the land at Lundale Farm in a better condition than when she began, and hopes to pass along a successful, sustainable, woman-run business to another eager, anxious farmer.
“’Sustainable’ is a story of hope and transformation, about passion for the land and a promise that it can be restored to once again sustain us.” The film has received many accolades at local film festivals and has even been noted as “what a farming documentary should be.” Those passionate about small business, sustainable agriculture, and a vibrant local food system should plan to attend for an evening of learning, networking, and fun.
Event attendees will have the opportunity to win local food prizes, including a $100 gift card to Whole Foods Market – Exton. Lamb McErlane and Exton Vision Center are sponsoring the film screening and event. Chester County Food Bank will be on hand to accept food and monetary donations, as food security is a critical component of a sustainable food system. They will also be seeking volunteers for their 2018 growing season.
