Charles F. Colvin, a plant science major at Penn State University and a resident of Malvern, and Francis A. Napoli, a horticulture major at Temple, Amber and a resident of Norristown, PA will receive the 2024 Fred Winter Memorial Horticultural Scholarships from the Philadelphia Society for Promoting Agriculture later this spring.
Education Chair Dr. Carl Brown explained that the $2,500 scholarships honor the memory of Dr. Fred Winter who owned a farm in the Pottstown area and was an active member of PSPA for many years. Dr. Winter had over two hundred rhododendron plants on his farm including several varieties he bred and developed himself.
Given by his widow Barbara Winter, this annual award is designed to recognize outstanding students majoring in Horticulture with the clear intent upon graduation from their undergraduate university (or after attending graduate school) of pursuing a career in one the many branches of horticulture including landscape architecture and environmental sciences. There were 12 applicants for this scholarship from seven Universities in PA, MD, and DE.
They were selected by a panel of distinguished judges who are members of the Philadelphia Society for Promoting Agriculture. This panel included a Secretary of Agriculture from the region, a retired president of a university, and four other distinguished members of the Association.
