Harriton House, originally known as Bryn Mawr, is an historic house which is located in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, and was most famously the residence of Founding Father Charles Thomson. He originally acquired the house and estate through his marriage to Richard Harrison’s daughter, Hannah Harrison, in 1774.
In 1789, after serving 15 years as the Secretary of the Continental and Confederation Congresses, Charles and his wife Hannah retired to Harriton, where he remained until his death in 1824. In his retirement, Charles pursued an interest in scientific agriculture, which was America’s principal industry immediately following the Revolution. He was a member of the Philadelphia Society for Promoting Agriculture. Harriton House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
