A Tale of Two Watersheds: The Delaware River Basin Overview

Most members of the Philadelphia Society for Promoting Agriculture live and practice agriculture in the Delaware River Basin. PSPA welcomed Elizabeth Brown, Director, External Affairs and Communications, for the Delaware River Basin Commission to its April 3, 2025 meeting at the Union League in downtown Philadelphia.

We learned that…

  • 330 miles
  • 13,500 sq. mi. watershed
  • Free-flowing mainstem
  • Tidal from ocean to Trenton
  • Unique habitats and communities
  • Roughly 20% of the Delaware River Basin’s land cover is agricultural.

Also, that the River meet our needs…

  • 14 million people in four states
  • Half of NYC drinking water
  • Four states
  • 6.1 billion gallons withdrawn daily
  • $21billion in economic value
  • Interstate boundary

Jaime Green, Ph.D. Eastern Regional Director, PA Department of Agriculture, Collegeville, PA also brought members an update on authorizing a Conservation District for the County of Philadelphia, the only county in Pennsylvania without one.
