Dr. Elizabeth (“Beth”) Guertal is a soil scientist and educator and was the first Rowe Endowment Professor in the Department of Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences at Auburn University (Auburn, AL).  She is one of only three women in the world who is a Fellow of the American Society of Agronomy, the Soil Society of America, and the Crop Science Society of America.  She served as president of the Crop Science Society of America, and is also a Fellow in the American Association for the Science.

Dr. Guertal will provide an interesting historical look at the development of nitrogen fertilizer and how nitrogen fertilizer has impacted history, hunger, and the environment.  She will also discuss the role various types of nitrogen fertilizers play in crop production and the environment, from explosions to methamphetamine to corn.
