In many ways, this springtime date will allow us a more satisfying trip.
The trip was originally organized so that we could see the Society’s copy of Arthur Young’s Annals of Agriculture on display in the inaugural exhibition of the new Fred W. Smith National Library for the Study of George Washington. Young sent this copy to the Society, and it was delivered to us by George Washington himself. The exhibition was titled “Take Note! George Washington the Reader,” and its focus was the president’s wide range of reading. The Smith Library will become a central research center for the scholarly study of George Washington and his time period. This naturally involves several early Society members, notably Samuel Powel, our first president.
The new exhibition that we will be seeing “Garden and Groves” will not contain Society material, but will highlight Washington’s design of the Mt Vernon landscape. And because it’s springtime we should be able to see more of Pioneer Farm, a site of four-acres that contains a replication of Washington’s 16-sided treading barn.Mt. Vernon old
